Ratio guide

Get the balance right every time

Start with these proportions, taste as you go and find your favorite balance.

Long and refreshing

1 part Dark Rum Alternative to 2 parts mixer. Start with cola, ginger ale or ginger beer. Add a squeeze of lime, then adjust the mixer to taste.

Bright and citrusy

2 parts Dark Rum Alternative to 1 part fresh lime juice. A starting point for a sour-style serve. Add a little sugar syrup at a time to balance the citrus.

Tropical and bittersweet

2 parts Dark Rum Alternative to 3 parts Italian Orange to 3 parts pineapple juice. The core of a Jungle Bird. Add lime and a little syrup using the recipe above.

Mixer pairings

What goes with Dark Rum Alternative

  • Cola: a classic pairing that brings out the caramel and vanilla. Finish with fresh lime.
  • Ginger ale: gentle spice and a little sweetness. Add an orange slice or a lime wedge.
  • Ginger beer: a bolder kick for a refreshing long drink. Serve with plenty of ice and fresh lime.
  • Pineapple juice: tropical fruit that complements the rich molasses notes. Try a splash of soda and a squeeze of lime.
  • Cloudy apple juice: orchard fruit meets caramel and warm spice. Finish with a thin apple slice.
  • Soda water: a lighter, drier option. Start with a small splash and add orange peel for an aromatic lift.

Finishing touches

A little garnish goes a long way

Squeeze a fresh lime wedge into a cola or ginger serve to balance the sweetness. Give mint a gentle slap between your palms before adding it to a Mai Tai, or finish a Jungle Bird with a pineapple wedge. For a simpler pour, twist orange peel over the glass to release its fragrant oils.
