Something Doesn’t Taste Quite Right?

A small change to the ratio, mixer, ice or garnish can make all the difference. We’ll help you adjust your serve and get the best from your Lyre’s.

First, a little mixing magic

Lyre’s spirit and liqueur alternatives are crafted as cocktail ingredients. Their flavors come to life with the right mixers, temperature and balance. If you’ve tried your bottle neat, start again with one of its recommended mixed serves.

Before you adjust

Four quick checks

Measure your pour

Use the recipe for your bottle as a starting point. A little extra mixer or syrup can change the balance more than you might expect.

Check the mixer

Freshly opened, chilled mixers make a difference. Tonic, soda and lemonade each bring a different level of sweetness, bitterness and fizz.

Chill and finish

Use fresh ice and the suggested garnish. Cold ingredients help keep the serve balanced, while citrus peel and herbs add aroma.

The golden rule: change one thing at a time, stir gently and taste before adding more.

Find your fix

What would you like to change?

Choose the closest match below. Start with a small adjustment: a teaspoon of citrus, a splash of mixer or a fresh garnish may be all you need.

My drink tastes too sweet

Try a little acidity or a less sweet mixer.

  • Add fresh lemon or lime juice a teaspoon at a time, where it suits the recipe.
  • For a long drink, try a small splash of soda water. Stop if the flavor starts to become too light.
  • Next time, reduce any added syrup or choose a less sweet mixer.

Good to know: soda adds no sweetness; tonic usually brings both sweetness and bitterness. They won’t give the same result.

My drink tastes too bitter or too sour

First, decide which flavor you’re noticing. Bitter can feel lingering and pithy; sour is the sharp tang of citrus.

  • Too bitter? If you’re using tonic, try replacing some with soda or a sweeter mixer on your next pour. Italian Orange and other aperitivo alternatives naturally have a bitter edge.
  • Too sour? Add sugar syrup a teaspoon at a time, stirring and tasting between additions. Reduce the citrus slightly next time.
  • Harsh citrus notes? Remove heavily squeezed citrus or crushed peel. Use a fresh slice or a small twist instead.

For creamy or milk-based serves, adjust the syrup or mixer rather than adding citrus, which may cause curdling.

My drink tastes too weak or watery

Bring the flavor back into balance.

  • Check your measurements. Too much mixer can hide the character of the Lyre’s ingredient.
  • If the drink is freshly made, try a small extra pour of the same Lyre’s ingredient and taste again.
  • If the ice has melted heavily, remake the drink with fresh ice and chilled ingredients.
  • Next time, use plenty of fresh ice and avoid stirring longer than needed. For shaken cocktails, follow the recipe’s shaking instructions.

Good to know: a non-alcoholic cocktail has a different feel from a full-strength one. Look for balanced flavor and aroma rather than an alcohol burn.

My drink tastes too strong or intense

Lengthen it gradually.

  • For a long drink, add the recommended mixer in small splashes until the balance suits you.
  • If the drink is already sweet enough, try soda rather than adding more sweet mixer.
  • For a short cocktail, check the recipe measurements and make sure you’ve stirred or shaken it with ice as directed.

If a bold aperitivo feels too bitter, try it in a longer serve with citrus and bubbles before returning to a shorter cocktail.

My drink is flat or feels like it’s missing something

Check the bubbles, then the aroma.

  • Use freshly opened, well-chilled sparkling mixers. Add them last and stir gently.
  • Twist citrus peel over the glass to release its oils, or give mint a gentle slap before adding it.
  • If the recipe calls for fresh citrus, use it. A small squeeze can lift a sweet or fruit-led serve.
  • For a foamy Espresso Martini, use the recommended coffee and shake with ice just before serving. Add sparkling ingredients after shaking in recipes that use them.

Garnish is part of the flavor experience. Start with the recipe’s suggestion before trying something new.

A fresh start

Build a better next pour

  1. Choose a recommended recipe for your bottle. Different alternatives work best with different proportions.
  2. Measure the ingredients. Start with the recipe before adjusting it to your taste.
  3. Use chilled mixers and fresh ice. Follow the recipe’s stirring or shaking method.
  4. Add the garnish and taste. Make one small adjustment, then taste again.

Keep the combination that works for you

A little drier? More citrus? A softer mixer? Note your favorite proportions so your next serve is easy to repeat.

One last check

Look after your bottle

Follow the storage instructions and recommended use-after-opening period on your bottle. Reseal with the original cap, refrigerate after opening where directed and keep track of when you opened it.
